A Little Background
Local Biz Camp was founded in 2016 by Julie Niehoff, former Director of Education for Constant Contact. After a few years of proving out the camp concept across the state of Texas, we are ready to grow. In the summer of 2019, 7 new Regional Camp Leaders will host Local Biz Camp events in their home cities of Portland, San Francisco, Charlotte, Denver, New York, Boston, Miami and we’ll still host across Texas in Dallas, San Antonio, Houston and Austin. Each regional leader brings more than 10 years of experience hosting business conferences and will invite other local leaders to share knowledge and wisdom as well.
We always include our local SBDC, SCORE, Chambers of Commerce and SBA leaders at every camp. We’re also grateful to our wonderful partners for coming all this way with us. Learn more about our partners.
About Skills After Service
Skills After Service is an education initiative for military service members and their families who are making the transition from active duty to civilian life. They are building the Transition Hub, an interactive website that provides state-by-state information about veteran-focused services, education options, skills training by industry and more. They are also creating a first-of-its-kind Soft Skills for the Workplace Certification for both veterans and for hiring managers who are looking to better understand and leverage the veteran workforce. SkillsAfterService.com will launch the transition hub in Fall 2019.
We are so excited to share this new partnership!
Veterans and Veteran-owned businesses have always been welcome at Local Biz Camp but now we’re actively working to include Veterans and their spouses – partly to provide the same information we are always focused on – starting, managing or growing a business. But also because we believe in honoring military service members, and we think it is important to bring civilians together with veterans to talk about their business, to help build a bridge for all of us to work together and to better understand each other. It’s not easy to transition from the military to civilian life. In a time when many businesses are concerned about a depleted employee pool, veterans seem to be a largely untapped resource – a highly skilled workforce full of leaders, engineers, specialists, smart and loyal potential employees and employers. Some of the content at Local Biz Camp will be geared specifically for veterans and their spouses, but all participants will benefit from all of the topics we include at camp.
Note – we’re working to make sure Veterans can come to Local Biz Camp free. Look for details on your camp’s registration page.
